Performed at the ICA, Boston, MA | 7-21-2022 | on the occasion of the exhibition “I AM AS I AM A MAN” by Napoleon Jones-Henderson

A performance that embodies the sacredness of the human and spiritual world. Inviting the audience to participate in a ritual that honors the lessons and [re]membering of African indigenous languages, stories, proverbs, and ancestors. Grounded in the tradition of the American South, Ga-Dagbe and Eʋwe people in Ghana.

Performances will welcome the audience into the first gallery (orange room) with a poem, featuring Brother Askia Toure and a percussionist. Then Dzidzor will invite the audience to participate in a moving, call, and response ring shout while moving through the exhibition and continue in procession to the Requiem gallery (blue room). The performance will be in homage to Napoleon Jones-Henderson’s shrine-like sculptures. Lifting up the exultation of the African-American church through proverbs of African griots and songs from Spirituals, Gospels, and Sacred festivals.
